So, When I'm Home Alone, I Get Crafty.

Yesterday, I made a skirt. An easy one, that my friend Sarah is St. Louis used to do all the time, and I was so jealous - a skirt out of an old pair of jeans.

The first thing you do is rip all the seams out of the inside of the legs. Also go slightly up the crotch, just to where it lays flat again (then stich it flat again, overlapping. You can see how in the finished pictures). I also undid the hems on the bottom of the legs and washed and dried the jeans several times to fray the hems, because I wanted that look.

ripped seams

Then, becuase I wanted a knee-length skirt, I cut the legs off at the knee. This was the hardest part for me... I'm scared of cutting - once you cut, you can't go back.

Legs!

Then, pin the lower legs in the space between the upper legs. I pinned and sewed and then cut the excess off... just in case I changed my mind about something...

Inside Skirt

and...

Outside Skirt

I wanted the pretty, un-done hem to hang below the legs of the skirt because I had pretty ribbon I'd bought with E-Liz that I wanted to use along the sides - I liked the idea of the formal ribbon with the rustic skirt.

Pinning the Ribbon On

And then I hand-sewed the ribbons on the bottom, and wore it to dinner!

Finished Skirt

Speaking of dinner? For dessert, I covered fresh pineapple with brown sugar and ginger, sauted for 5 minutes, and served with a little melted vanilla ice cream (the poor man's creme anglais)... The boys loved it.

ok. could i marry you? not only did you make a skirt but you also made a fresh and yummy sounding dessert? Where did you get the recipe? I have a feeling you were just sitting in your fabulous house thinking fabulous thoughts when you came up with it on a whim. Martha Stewart better watch her back!

Wow. That actually looks really good. I'm sorry but I didn't buy it until the final picture. But I'm a guy who dresses pretty plainly. So I thought this was too out there to work. But it works really well. But I am a little confused. So, does the back have legs too or is in the front? Okay, I just reread your post and now I get it. Legs in the back too. Seriously Marse, very impressive.

Love it! You so made it work.
You are the best. When we live in the White House together, will you make me one of those skirts?

I tried this once and it looked like shit. The back stuck out like a silly peacock. Yours looks FANTABULOSO.
