The Akron Public Library hosted Dave Eggers tonight, talking about his latest book and the crisis in Sudan. Unfortunately, the man the book is about, Valentino Achak Deng, was stuck in Chicago with the weather (but when that was announced, only one person actually left. Valentino would have been awesome, but I was there for Dave.).
Dave read from the book, and discussed the backstories behind the stories in the book, and also how he and Valentino worked together, and how they met, what Valentino, and many of the "Lost Boys" of Sudan were doing now. Best of all, he took audience questions at the end - and I expected people to ask about A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, but except for one question that asked about writing in general, everyone asked about What is the What, which I found appropriate. I'm sure that, after almost 10 years, Dave Eggers is kind of tired of hearing "No, really, aHWoSG changed my life! How's Toph?"
But I secretly wanted to say that.
It's probably good that I didn't stand in line to get anything signed, and that we went to Luigi's, instead. Because nothing caps off an evening like Pizza Bianco and a half carafe of red wine.

I read down to that Cutie Knut - isn't he adorable? Of course, we have to remember that polar bears are bad-tempered and vicious and will eat us........but awwwwww! Ain't he just the most gorgeous!!

wow... like I must live in a cave because I had never heard of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius... But I did hear of his most recent book about the lost boys on NPR. Anyway, this looks like it was a great event. I am a little jealous of Akron. Ok, not really since it was like 83 here today. Ha!

That is really cool you got to check out the Egg man (I'm sure he enjoys being called that). McSweeney's is the greatest!
