I Wish My Life Was Actually As Cool As It Sometimes Sounds On This Blog:

The last time I went to Modai, a popular sushi place, it was very late at night, and the atmosphere was very club-like. It was dark, the music was loud, we sat on a couch while we ate our sushi. Last night was a completely different experience. It was bright and relatively quiet. The sushi, however, remained amazing. Laura and I showed up early, 7, and were immediately seated in the window by an older Japanese lady who patted me on the back in a motherly fashion.

Through a complicated series of events which I will not get into here, I ended up picking up my first piece of the night with my hands and eating it - I swear that I'm amazing at the chopsticks. I can pick up grains of rice and ice cubes, people. But. This was beyond my control. Laura and I laughed about it and went on eating and talking, but five minutes later, the sweet, older, grandfatherly sushi chef came up to us and asks how our meal is, and we reply very affirmatively that it's delicious, and then he shyly hands me this:

Yes, that's a homemade set of child's chopsticks. Because he'd been watching me eat the first piece, and made me these because he wanted me to be able to eat my sushi in the proper manner. It was very sweet, but I didn't use them because, um, I know how to use chopsticks.

After dinner, sake, and a dragon (I don't know what it was, but it was pink and had Absolut Kurant in it), Laura and I wandered around the Loop until it was time to go to the movie at the Tivoli. And if you haven't already, run out and see Thank You For Smoking. Seriously, some of the wittiest dialogue I've seen in a movie in 10 years. An insane amount of famous actors, including Katie Holmes pre-brainwashing. And the dialogue is so smart! I've said that already, but I don't care. I can't get over it. I'm actually going to drag my law school studying fiend of a husband to go see it in the theatre with me again (shhh!! He doesn't know this yet.) because it was that good.

And after that fun night, today will be filled with laundry and house cleaning. Yay!

Sounds like a great time out. But seriously, can anything top laundry and cleaning? I think not.

Yes, I'm weird.

I wish I had time to go do this stuff! I still haven't even seen V for Vendetta! I'm doing it every night I'm in the States . . . except for, you know the wedding and rehearsal dinner nights . . .

I was hoping she made that movie before Tom Cruise wrecked her.
Here via Michele today.
Oh, and my boyfriend and I are now "regulars" at the local sushi place, and the chef's always know we're game for "something new".

Oooh... sushi is something that we need to try out here in St. Louis. Far more restaurants than my budget will allow, but maybe Modai is a good place to start.

That movie was soooo good!
I am so glad that you liked it too. Wasn't Rob Lowe in a kimono just HILARIOUS?????

But did you know that nigiri sushi should only be eaten by hand? And that you do not dip the rice in your soy sauce, but only the fish (or whatever) on top?

I have this on very good authority from our friendly neighbourhood sushi chef.

Do you like my new avatar? I think it's going to work well with you-know-what. And plus it's kinda scary.

You soooo didn't know how to use the chopsticks...admit it. you were having trouble. I didn't want to crush your agility dreams but that piece you "had" to pick up with your hands was most def chopstickable (it's a word ;)). But we'll let it slide.
It was a great dinner though and I gotta say the chopstick kit for beginners was kinda a key addition to the greatness, wouldn't you say? They were so cute there!
And the movie keeps cracking me up when a scene or phrase pops into my head...lol. Love it...and I love you :) good girl date all around, cheers
wow, long comment, sorry:/

I want to live where there are swanky sushi joints! I had good old Suehiro in downtown GJ on Friday, and that's about as good as it gets in this neck of the woods!

I made my future mother-in-law eat sushi once. With chopsticks. I think she still hates me.

I was in a Vietnamese place once and ordered a baked catfish that was cooked in a cookery pot. The waitress tried to discourage me since the fish had "bones." I insisted, so when it came, she picked out the bones for me. She was grandmotherly and kind and understood only a little more English than I Vietnamese, so I played along. But heck, I'd eaten fish with bones in it all my life-after all we were too poor to afford a filet knife. (well, not really, but it sounded good)
