I Didn't See This One Coming:

My older sister and her boyfriend were talking about names, and my older sister told him that she'd like to name a child after me. Obviously. Who wouldn't want to name a child after me?

"Marcia," my sister's boyfriend replies. "Hm. We could run into some problems with that name. I personally love it, and your sister, but, in Tiawanese [the dialect that most of his relatives speak], Marcia roughly translates as 'Your mother just died.'"

Damn it.

My first chance at immortality completely squashed.

Oh! That sucks! But it is a little funny. Hee.

My name roughly translates to "pissed off feline" in English, if it makes you feel any better.

I don't see the problem.

My name means "child of God" yet my mom told me I was the spawn of satan growing up. Nice.

Trying to be an advocate for your cause here, perhaps they could continue with the process of naming the baby after you, and then when speaking to the more ethnically diverse reaches of the ol' address book, refer to the child as "Marsha," or something, when talking to those from Taiwan... I mean it's not like a thousand Americans won't butcher it exactly that way every day.

How can they pass up this opportunity for cultural exchange?
